History of the Mountain
Burnt Mountain has a long and interesting history. There is evidence that areas of the mountain were used
by Native Americans. In fact, if you explore long enough, you'll come across the "bent tree's" they used to
mark direction. There is also the legend of a secret cave they used to store gold and other treasured items.
Burnt Mountain got its name from a fire that nearly consumed the mountain many years ago. The fire
resulted from excessive logging that occurred when Atlanta was being rebuilt after the Civil War. It seems
that Burnt Mountain had a high concentration of highly sought after Chestnut trees, which were used in
many of the finer homes. Today there is no trace of the devastation and Burnt Mountain continues to offer
the beauty and serenity that has made it such a special place to those lucky few who have come to know
and love this place.
